Full Day Freedom Route Tour – Pietermaritzburg

Ghandi Statue

  • Transfer from Beverly Hills Hotel in the morning.
  • Drive to Pietermaritzburg. Our first stop in Pitermaritzburg is Alan Paton Centre at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. This centre offers intensive information of Alan Paton, the author of “Cry the beloved Country”, and it also houses information of other political leaders that had fought for Freedom.
  • We then go into one of the main townships during the struggle that is Imbali which was home to many of our Political Leaders. We visit the Manaye Hall, where Nelson Mandela delivered his last speech before skipping the country. We then go to Mzansi Lounge at Imbali for township lunch (at your account)
  • Our next stop is the Pietermaritzburg Train Station where Mahatma Gandhi was Thrown Off and his philosophy of Satyagraha had begun.
  • Project Gateway which houses the Old Prison is another landmark in Pietermaritzburg that is a must see. This is the oldest prison that had detained many of the Freedom fighters during Apartheid.
  • The Gandhi Statue in the City Centre is also a must see.
  • The second township that we will visit is Sobantu.
  • Our first stop is at the famous Howick Falls which is a natural wonder.
  • After the Howick Falls tour we take a trip to the Nelson Mandela Arrest sight which is on the out-skirts of Howick.
  • Afternoon transfer back to Durban
