Meet and Greet by African Link Freedom Route representative.
Travel to KwaMuhle Museum for an introduction to the Durban system. KwaMuhle is central to the lives of every African who ever lived and worked in the city of Durban between 1928 and 1986. It was also important to anyone who employed the labour force. This history pervades people’s memory of this city: the administration of passes, the labour bureau, housing, health and administration of beer halls all centered on KwaMuhle.
We then travel to Cato Manor Heritage Centre where a tour of an era gone by can be experienced. It is an area rich in cultural and political heritage. Establishment of informal settlement in Cato Manor by the African and Indian populations started as the municipality was unwilling to provide adequate housing for poor Africans or Indians coming to Durban for work, and because many Africans who came to Durban for work were not ‘legally’ in Durban, according to influx control regulations. Tea/ Drinks can be purchased at the Coffee Shop at your own cost.
Our next stop will be the Inanda Heritage Sites of Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement, John Dube’s Ohlange Institute, the Shembe Church and the Inanda Seminary School.
We then take a trip to Groutville for a tour of the Albert Luthuli Museum which was home to the Luthuli Family during the Apartheid struggle. Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was a visionary leader. He dedicated his life to raising the awareness of human rights violations and fighting for an end to racial discrimination. Return to the hotel in the afternoon
